A commemorative day marking the first anniversary of the mass shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar Experimental Elementary School in Belgrade is being held today.
A special programme called "Awakening" marks the beginning of a multi-layered process of memorialisation.
In front of the school, where a student shot and killed nine students and a school guard, the families of those killed, relatives, friends and citizens gathered to express solidarity and empathy.
The commemoration of the anniversary began at 8:40 a.m. with the sounding of sirens, while the media in Serbia stopped all broadcasts for one minute at 8:41 a.m. in memory of those killed in the tragedy.
Citizens and everyone who wants to mark the anniversary of the tragedy can write in the Book of Remembrance throughout the day, in front of the entrance to the school, and the writing of messages dedicated to the victims started early in the morning.
In 10 Kralja Milutina Street, in front of the Vladislav Ribnikar school, a spatial-art installation with motifs of blue birds and red pencils, as symbols of lost young lives, was installed.
The anniversary of the murder of nine students and a school guard will be marked at several locations in Belgrade, and a Forum will be organised in the area near the monument to Desanka Maksimović on Tašmajdan, in which citizens will discuss with representatives of the Multidisciplinary Team about issues related to the causes and consequences of the mass shootings that took place on 3 May 2023 in the Vladislav Ribnikar school and on 4 May 2023 in the villages of Dubona and Malo Orašje.
Citizens will be able to leave their suggestions and thoughts in special boxes, which will be important material in the process of developing ideas about the future memorial centre, and a stage programme is planned for tonight.
