Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić stated that the activities of Serbia’s delegation within the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York have strengthened the country’s position on the global stage.
In a statement to journalists in New York, Đurić said that at the very beginning, a step forward was made in relation to the overall position, which also refers to the protection of our national interests when it comes to Kosovo and Metohija.
Speaking about the way the Serbian delegation will act, the Minister stated that it is planned for President Aleksandar Vučić to meet with more than 40 world leaders, while he will talk to numerous foreign ministers from across the world, noting that he can already present concrete results.
According to him, Serbia wrote a seemingly small, but significant part of its diplomatic history at this session of the UN General Assembly through the establishment of diplomatic relations with several countries with which it had no prior communication and interaction.
These are smaller countries, but countries that have membership in both the UN and UNESCO, as well as in other international organisations, where every vote is important to Serbia, which is defending its monasteries in Kosovo and Metohija and its territorial integrity and sovereignty before these organisations, he noted. Furthermore, together with many countries, Serbia also stands for the protection of the principles of the UN Charter, international law and advocacy for peace, Đurić pointed out.
Đurić added that the visa regime with several smaller countries has also been liberalised.
He reiterated that Serbia has already managed to strengthen its position on the global stage with its participation in the assembly session so far and to reaffirm its respect for all countries equally, regardless of their strength and size, as well as that it adheres to the principles of international law.
