The statement of Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica is as follows:
I congratulate you, respected citizens of Serbia, on the 60th anniversary of victory over fascism.
May 9 is a special date in the history of the world and for Serbia's destiny. Peoples who fought to defend freedom celebrate this great day with pride.
Our country and its people demonstrated firm will to defeat the fascist aggressor and defend the mother country even at the cost of countless victims.
Today, on Victory Day, the descendants express deep gratitude to heroes and defenders of their homeland. We have left behind us the misery of the civil war and internal divisions, paying due tribute to all those who gave their lives to defeat fascism.
With deep sorrow, we remember hundreds of thousands of people and courageous defenders of our country who lost their lives innocently. We had some of the greatest losses in all of Europe, but despite all the temptations that we are still facing, we know that those victims were not lost in vain, and that the wound will heal. Serbia will never forget those who went to battle aware of their possible fate, nor the innocent blood spilled everywhere where our people live.
That is why we can rightfully claim today that Serbia has always made a right historic choice in large and fateful battles to defend basic values of civilisation. Not asking the price it would take, Serbia took part in the First World War and the Second World War, and thus forever lined up among the nations who defend justice, freedom and peace, giving its invaluable contribution to the victory of the Allies.
Today as well, Serbia has taken a right path that leads to the community of free European nations. Serbia knows today its state and national goals and is trying with all its forces to become part of the joint European family of states and nations.
On behalf of the Serbian government, I express particular satisfaction that thanks to our fighters against fascism, Serbia and its citizens are honourable and rightful participants in the celebration of Victory Day, celebrated today by the whole world.
