Get to know Serbia

Getting to know a country means feeling its spirit, knowing its hidden landscapes and the individuals who have made it what it is. Getting to know a country is similar to getting to know a person who, over time, will become your friend.
Traveling with friends is an unforgettable experience, filled with shared moments and amazing memories. Join the many who have already discovered why Serbia is so irresistible. We hope you come to love our country as much as we do.

Coat of arms

The iconic two-headed eagle, a symbol inherited from Byzantium, carries deep significance. One of its heads is said to represent the direction towards the heavenly kingdom, while the other faces the earthly kingdom.

Flag

It is widely believed that the red on the Serbian flag represents the blood shed for the country, the blue symbolises freedom and the white stands for the nurturing milk that strengthens Serbian children.

Flag experts, however, suggest that these symbolic meanings may not be unique to Serbia’s history, but rather carry universal significance. They interpret the blue colour as a symbol of fidelity and loyalty, while the white represents purity and honesty.

The flag of the Republic of Serbia is used as a:

  • State flag;
  • National flag, with a 3:2 ratio (length to height);
  • Standard: a square-shaped version of the state flag used by the President of the Republic and President of the National Assembly.

Based on the authority granted by the Law on the Appearance and Use of the Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem of the Republic of Serbia, in 2010, the Government adopted the Decree on Determining the Standards of the Great and the Small Coat of Arms, the Standard of the Flag and the Music Notation of the Anthem of the Republic of Serbia.

Anthem

The anthem of the Republic of Serbia is “Bože pravde”, with lyrics written by Jovan Đorđević in 1872 and music composed by Davorin Jenko.

It was officially adopted as the national anthem of Serbia on 8 November 2006.

Anthem lyrics:

God of Justice; Thou who saved us

when in deepest bondage cast

Hear Thy Serbian children's voices,

Be our help as in the past.

With Thy mighty hand sustain us,

Still our rugged pathway trace;

God, our hope; protect and cherish,

Serbian lands and Serbian race!

Bind in closest links our kindred

Teach the love that will not fail,

May the loathed fiend of discord

Never in our ranks prevail.

Let the golden fruits of union

Our young tree of freedom grace;

God, our Master! Guide and prosper,

Serbian lands and Serbian race!

Lord! Avert from us Thy vengeance,

Thunder of Thy dreaded ire;

Bless each Serbian town and hamlet,

Mountain, meadow, heart and spire!

When our host goes forth to battle

Death or victory to embrace-

God, our Master! Guide and prosper,

Serbian lands and Serbian race!

On our sepulchre of ages

Breaks the resurrection morn,

From the slough of direst slavery

Serbia anew is born.

Through five hundred years of durance

We have knelt before Thy face,

All our kin, O God! Deliver

Thus entreats the Serbian race!
