The creative industries are an important sector of the Serbian economy, contributing between 5.8% and 6.3% to the country’s GDP. The export of creative industry products has surged by 81%, accounting for 2.5% of Serbia’s total exports in 2021. Simultaneously, the sector has generated an increasing number of jobs, with 19,000 more employees than in 2019, now totalling 155,138 positions, which represents 7% of the workforce in Serbia. Notably, 49% of these employees are women, 45% are highly educated and 60% are young people aged between 25 and 45. The creative industries in Serbia showcase the country’s intellectual capital, encompassing areas such as publishing, print media, graphic design, IT and software development, music and film production, design, radio and television, advertising, fashion and traditional crafts.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia has prioritised the development of creative industries, aiming to support:
- The accelerated growth of the sector through systematic state support, cultivating an ongoing open dialogue between the public, private and non-governmental sectors, as well as the professional community;
- Dynamic cross-sectoral dialogue and collaboration, improving connections with other economic sectors and the private sector;
- The creation of a comprehensive platform for introducing artists, creative professionals and innovators to international markets, offering access to broader audiences and markets;
- The promotion of education, openness, innovation and creativity as key advantages in building a knowledge-based economy, reshaping Serbia’s image and redefining cultural diplomacy;
- The repositioning of Serbia as a global hub for artistic, creative and innovative work, aiming to attract people to come to the country to work, live, study and invest.
To support these objectives, the Serbia Creates platform was established. The platform represents a modern approach to showcasing Serbia’s values – creativity, innovation and originality. Its mission is to recognise, affirm and highlight artistic and creative achievements, supporting success across various fields within the knowledge-based economy. A prominent project under this initiative is the creative-innovative multifunctional centre, Ložionica, a public facility focused on creative industries, innovation and the knowledge economy. Ložionica is set to become a landmark in Belgrade, a destination for both locals and tourists, offering a space for the creation and collaboration of talent.
