Minister of Justice Maja Popovic said in Vienna today that our country will continue to be committed to achieving gender equality in the judiciary, stating that women represent the majority among holders of judicial functions in Serbia.
Popovic participated in the panel “Inclusive Justice = Resilient Justiceˮ, which was organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the occasion of International Day of Women Judges.
Addressing the participants in the meeting, the Minister pointed out that the greater representation of women in the judiciary promotes a policy focused on equal opportunities, protection of human rights and access to justice and public services.
She pointed to the fact that in our country women hold the positions of President of the Constitutional Court, President of the Supreme Court, President of the High Council of the Judiciary, Supreme Public Prosecutor and State Attorney, which we are very proud of.
Also, out of the total number of judges, women make up 73 percent, while 59 percent of them hold the position of court president, and almost as many are in public prosecutor's positions, Popovic stated.
The panel was held as part of the "Women in Justice, Women for Justice" campaign, which emphasises the role of women and raises awareness of the importance of greater representation of women in the judiciary.
