Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić participated in the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in New York, at which he thanked the member countries for respecting international law in the past decades.
Recalling that he represents the country in whose capital the first summit of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries was held, Đurić pointed out that Serbia still respects and cherishes the principles on which the organisation was founded, because those principles are still relevant today.
Serbia was faced with a serious violation of the UN Charter, both in 1999 when it was attacked without the consent of the UN Security Council, and in 2008 when the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština unilaterally declared the independence of the southern Serbian province, Đurić said.
The head of Serbian diplomacy reminded that this unilateral decision was made without the consent of Serbia, without the approval of UNMIK and without any referendum.
Today, unfortunately, in many places we see the severe consequences of setting dangerous precedents around the world, regardless of the size or population of a country. Let us unite in standing up for peace in these difficult times, when the very word ‘peace’ has become controversial, the head of Serbian diplomacy said.
According to him, Serbia is a country oriented towards the future and economic development, which tries to solve all problems inherited from the past in a peaceful way, and will not forget old friends on its development path.
Đurić called on the representatives of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement to remain loyal to the original principles of that organisation, stressing that they will always have the support of Serbia in this, according to a news release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
