Selaković attends inaugural opening ceremony of 19th Francophonie Summit

Belgrade/Paris, 4 October 2024

Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković, as an envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia, attended today’s inaugural opening ceremony of the 19th Francophonie Summit at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts near Paris, with the presence of about 100 heads of state delegations, which was addressed by President of France Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of Tunisia Kamel Madouri, as well as Secretary General of La Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo.

At the ceremony, the chairmanship of the summit was handed over from Tunisia to this year’s host, France, which will make this country the host of Francophonie after 33 years.

On the eve of the ceremony, Selaković, in his capacity as an envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia, met with President of France Emmanuel Macron, and conveyed the greetings of President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, and expressed Serbia’s readiness to further strengthen cooperation.

The Minister of Culture also spoke with heads of state and government, and on that occasion informed them of our country's desire to become a full member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie and thus reaffirm its commitment to the values that it itself cherishes and shares as part of its culture and heritage.

He reminded that in order to gradually fulfill the requirements for full membership, the Republic of Serbia became an associate member of La Francophonie on 11 October 2018, and pointed out that in our country 4.3% of the population speaks French, while the government of Serbia is active in improving the French language skills in the civil service.
