Speaking as the envoy of the President of Serbia at the ceremony held at the Memorial Church of Saint Demetrius with an ossuary in Lazarevac, Vučević stated that the battle demonstrated the self-sacrifice of the people, the exceptional skills of the Serbian command and the courage of the army.
He recalled that it is a well-known fact that the uniqueness of the Battle of Kolubara has long drawn the attention of military experts and is studied at military academies worldwide.
Among the heavy and tragic losses Serbia suffered in World War I, the mass death of student soldiers during the Battle of Kolubara stands out as one of the saddest and most difficult episodes, he noted.
Of the student soldiers who participated in this battle, known as the 1300 Corporals, 400 sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their homeland, Vučević said, stressing that the Serbian army’s victory in the 1914 Battle of Kolubara was a major success for the Allies in World War I against the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The Prime Minister affirmed that the spirit and determination of our victors still live within us today, guiding us as we face new challenges and threats as a society.
The central state ceremony began with the laying of wreaths at the Memorial Church of Saint Demetrius with an ossuary.
Over 40,000 Serbian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers rest in the crypt of the Lazarevac church.
