Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović emphasised today, during a meeting with a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which began its second visit to Serbia, that it is crucial to accelerate the procedures in order to create the necessary prerequisites for the start of the construction of the Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant.

Đedović Handanović stated that the Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant represents the most strategically important project in the energy sector, which will contribute to increasing energy security, integrating renewable energy sources and creating new capacities for energy storage and balancing.
She recalled that Serbia has been cooperating with JICA for two years on the preparation of project and technical documentation and that an agreement has been reached on the importance of meeting the requirements necessary for such complex projects.
According to her, Serbia wants the implementation of the project to start as soon as possible, given the importance of this pumped-storage hydropower plant.
The goal is to overcome the challenges related to the completion of the project assessment by JICA so that it can provide financing as soon as possible, in accordance with JICA’s specific requirements and procedures, which will be done in coordination with all relevant institutions, the Minister explained.
Đedović Handanović emphasised that she expects additional support and engagement of JICA experts, so that the construction of the Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant can begin as soon as possible and without delay.
