Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women Tatjana Macura presented our country's population measures today at the UN headquarters in New York.
Participating in the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) panel dedicated to demographic challenges, which was organized within the framework of the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, Macura stated that Serbia has adopted a comprehensive set of measures to encourage births and support women who want to become mothers.
She explained that this includes financial support for families, subsidized purchases of a first home, favourable loans for young people, and a special emphasis on medically assisted reproduction, with one of the most liberal approaches to this topic in the world.
The minister pointed out that the state fully financially covers an unlimited number of IVF attempts for women under 45 who do not have children, with funds allocated from the budget for approximately 11,000 IVF attempts in 2023 alone, adding that the fertility rate has been raised from 1.38 in 2007 to 1.62 in 2024.
