Covic said that the aim of new attacks is to ethnically cleanse the province from the remaining Serb population. In that case, the international community would recognise the factual state of affairs and grant independence to Kosovo, which would strongly destabilise the already unstable situation in the Balkans.
The Head of the Coordinating Centre said that before and during the recent outbreak of violence by ethnic Albanian extremists and terrorists, the KFOR seriously undermined its credibility and its mission in the province.
According to Covic, the KFOR still shrinks from direct confrontation with ethnic Albanian extremists and terrorists, because it is clear that the present number of peacekeeping troops in the province would not be sufficient to adequately respond in the case of new attacks. That fact was confirmed by KFOR Commander General Kamerhoff in his talks with EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
Covic warned the NATO Parliamentary Assembly that Al-Qaeda is taking roots in Kosovo-Metohija, turning it into its European base. He said that additional threat to Kosovo Serbs and Serbia is the fact that someone wants the March 17 and 18 ethnic cleansing to be forgotten as no one answered for the burning of villages, churches and monasteries.
Covic asked the NATO Parliamentary Assembly why UNMIK Spokesman Derek Chappell was relieved of office immediately after declaring that Kosovo Serbs were not responsible for the drowning of ethnic Albanian children in the Ibar river. He also asked why the murderers of the Stolic family from Obilic and Serb children from Gorazdevac had still not been found. He concluded that such an attitude sends a clear signal to ethnic Albanian extremists and terrorists to continue with crimes.
The Head of the Coordinating Centre said that the NATO does not act with the same resoluteness when ethnic Albanian crimes and terror against Serbs are concerned, as it did in 1999 when it bombed Serbia because of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija.
He pointed out that there can be no talks on the Standards for Kosovo before it is established who and why obstructs the return of 230,000 Serbs expelled from the province.
Covic concluded that the level of democracy in Serbia cannot be measured by the number of lost Serbian territories, read the statement by the Coordinating Centre.
