Joint work with education unions on adoption of strategic documents for improving situation in education

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević met today with representatives of the education and preschool education unions, with whom he continued discussions on improving the financial status of employees in this field.

At the meeting, Vučević repeated the proposal of the Serbian government that from 1 January 2025, educational workers in schools and teachers and medical staff who are employed in preschool institutions receive a two-digit percentage salary increase of 12 percent, and non-teaching staff eight percent.

The Prime Minister also announced that the possibility of a one-time financial assistance to all employees in education and preschool institutions will be considered, which will be presented concretely in the coming days.

Vučević said that amendments to the Penal Code should be adopted by the Serbian parliament by the end of the year.

Vučević emphasised that this increase would significantly help reach the goal of making the starting salary in education equal to the average salary in the Republic of Serbia, which is one of the demands of the unions.

The Prime Minister once again thanked the unions for the open and honest conversation, stating that it is important to openly discuss problems, all in the interest of the employees, and added that he understands their expectations, but at the same time takes care of Serbia's economic stability.

According to him, the Serbian government fully understands the views of the employees, whom it treats with full respect, as shown by the meetings and discussions that are being conducted.

Unions representatives praised the state's steps to start a public debate on amendments to the Penal Code, which provide for the introduction of criminal offenses of assaults on persons employed in educational and health institutions, and added that it would be good if all employees in schools and preschool institutions were paid a one-time financial aid in the coming period.

At the meeting, it was agreed that the government and education unions should work together on the adoption of strategic documents on improving the situation in the field of education.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Education Slavica Đukić Dejanović and State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Saša Stevanović.
