The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed serious concern regarding the verbal decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan yesterday to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.
This decision constitutes a gross violation of the principles of international law, the UN Charter and the current UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
The current political situation in Sudan, characterised by uncertainty and lack of legitimacy of the current government, calls into question the validity of such international decisions.
The capacity of the current Government of Sudan to make decisions of vital importance for international relations is questionable, especially in the context of issues concerning the sovereignty and territorial integrity of United Nations member states.
The Republic of Serbia recalls previous UN Security Council resolutions, as well as the valid ways of resolving the status of Kosovo and Metohija, which provide for dialogue, not unilateral action. This decision not only contradicts the norms of international law, but also undermines efforts for a peaceful resolution of relations in the Balkans.
The Ministry calls on the international community to respect the UN Charter and the principles of international law, and to refrain from recognising the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, as well as to support dialogue as the only sustainable solution.
At the same time, the Ministry calls on the Government of Sudan to reconsider its decision, taking into account the complexity and delicacy of the situation.
With its actions, Serbia continues to advocate for the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the strengthening of peace and stability in the region.
