Progress achieved in the field of environmental protection

Participants in the afternoon part of the plenary session of the Sixth ministerial conference "Environment for Europe" concluded that a progress has been made in the field of environmental protection since the fifth conference held in Kiev and that that tendency should be continued.

Implementation of international agreements has had an important influence on the attitude of countries in the region to environment-related problems and that countries in transition made a big contribution in evaluating the current situation in this field.

The positions adopted at the Kiev conference served as guidelines in the development of environmental policies of these countries.

In the second part of the afternoon session, ministers of environmental protection and education ministers, who are taking part in this process for the first time, adopted the Draft statement on education for sustainable development. Participants in the session were welcomed by Serbian Minister of Education Zoran Loncar, who said that education is the pillar of the strategy of sustainable development.

Jaqueline Cramer, the Dutch Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment presented the key results in implementation of UNECE Strategy of education for sustainable development.

She said that exchange of information between the countries that take part in the strategy's implementation resulted in visible positive results, but that the final goal has not been achieved yet.

Participants in the conference also adopted a statement on the importance of preservation of biodiversity for overall environment.

Norwegian Minister of the Environment Helen Bjornoy said that biodiversity is one of the most important pillars for the future and voiced hope that the Belgrade conference will be a step forward in making a broad partnership between all interested parties.

At tonight's roundtable dedicated to biodiversity, a report "Taking the measure" was presented, made by All-European ecological network, and the holding of a high-level conference in Lisbon on November 12 and 13 was also announced, that will deal with issues related to biodiversity and business.
