First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ivica Dacic announced today that the Republic of Ghana has withdrawn the recognition of Kosovo-Metohija, of which it informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a note.
Dacic said in a written statement that the country became the 16th United Nations member state to withdraw Kosovo's recognition.
We are officially informed that the government of Ghana considers that its 2012 decision to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija was premature and that recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations constituted a violation of the Helsinki Agreement, as well as a fundamental violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, he said.
The First Deputy Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the government of Ghana for this decision, which is based on international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and for the fact that a process aimed at resolving this issue, supported by Ghana, is underway.
We expect this decision will encourage other UN members to reconsider their decisions and withdraw recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, he said.
The note adopted by the Republic of Ghana is available here.
