Several people arrested in ongoing operation against environmental crime

Outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić stated today that through a joint, coordinated operation in the fight against environmental crime, the police officers of the Ministry of the Interior, relevant institutions and competent prosecutors’ offices have uncovered several dozen criminal offences against the environment.

Dačić specified that five people were arrested in that operation, while a search was launched for one person, on suspicion of having obtained illicit gains of RSD 539 million.

He stated that 51 criminal charges were filed against a total of 57 individuals due to the existence of grounds for suspicion that they committed 75 criminal offences of importing hazardous substances into Serbia and unauthorised processing, disposal and storage of hazardous substances, damage and pollution of the environment.

According to him, they are also suspected of having committed criminal offences of failing to take environmental protection measures, unauthorised engagement in a certain activity, unauthorised trade, illegal logging, unauthorised production, illegal occupation of land and unauthorised construction.

Members of the Ministry of the Interior continue intensive work on preventing and detecting criminal offences in the field of environmental crime, according to the principle of zero tolerance, Dačić said and appealed to citizens to report all cases of environmental crime.
