Prime Minister Ana Brnabic opened the first industrial biological wastewater treatment plant in Belgrade today at the Smurfit Kappa doo factory.
The opening of this facility, whose value is €5 million, was also attended by Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Group for Europe Saverio Mayer and General Manager of Smurfit Kappa doo Milan Markovic.
Brnabic emphasised that today is an important day for the protection of the environment, both in Belgrade and throughout Serbia, because it represents a turning point in the fight for a cleaner environment and more sustainable development of our country.
She explained that this first facility will purify water from the Danube, used for industrial purposes, with biological treatment and return it to the river in a cleaner state than the one in which it was taken from the river.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Smurfit Kappa is an example for all businessmen in Serbia.
She reminded that by 31 December 2025, all business entities in Serbia that have waste water from technological production processes must build facilities for their purification.
Brnabic presented that, along with the protection and improvement of air quality and solid waste storage, one of the basic priorities in Serbia is the treatment of waste water.
According to her, the Government of Serbia has allocated slightly more than €4.5 billion for wastewater treatment projects in our country, €1 billion of which is intended for projects in Belgrade.
