At a joint news conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is on a two-day visit to Serbia, Vučić said that the European path is of key importance for our progress, that Serbia will work with commitment on that path, and that accordingly he hopes to see the results.
He also pointed out that he discussed the geopolitical situation with the European Commission President and informed his interlocutor about the kind of policy Serbia is pursuing, respecting the UN Charter.
Vučić stated that Kosovo and Metohija was also discussed at the meeting, at which he presented Serbia’s position and spoke thoroughly about the necessity of compromise and discussions about the future of the entire region.
Speaking about trade in goods and services, he specified that Serbia had an exchange with the EU of almost €51 billion in 2023, with the belief that in 2024 this exchange will be even greater.
Von der Leyen confirmed that the EU is the top trade partner of Serbia, which has increasingly good economic results, and pointed out that Serbia is well on its way to becoming part of the Single Euro Payments Area from next year, which will facilitate money transfers and make them faster, safer and cheaper.
She emphasised that the partnership between Serbia and the EU is strengthening and congratulated the country on receiving an investment-grade credit rating.
The European Commission President particularly emphasised the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which, as she said, should bring the economies of the region closer to the EU economy and integrate the regional market with the European single market.
Von der Leyen recalled that a year has passed since the implementation of this plan began, with countries of the Western Balkans preparing reform agendas.
Now the implementation of €1.6 billion that Serbia will receive as part of the Growth Plan should begin, she confirmed and at the same time assessed that Serbia is one of the most advanced countries in the EU accession process and that it is in this spirit that the opening of Cluster 3 is being worked on.
