Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić said tonight that the rescue operation after the accident in Novi Sad has been completed, with a toll of 14 fatalities and three injured.
Dačić noted in a statement to the media that the accident was caused by the collapse of the outdoor roof at the railway station building in Novi Sad.
He said that three people were rescued and hospitalised, including two women who had been trapped under the debris, with whom rescuers managed to communicate.
Rescue teams arrived within minutes of the emergency call, with over 80 rescuers from multiple cities participating in the operation and heavy machinery from the Ministry of the Interior, as well as equipment from city utilities and certain private companies, utilised in the rescue efforts, he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged all those who participated in the rescue operation, noting that the identification of the victims was under way.
According to Dačić, the authorities will conduct an investigation at the scene following the rescue operations, including to determine those responsible for this tragedy.
