Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced today that he is stepping down from his position, tendering his irrevocable resignation.
Vučević told an extraordinary news conference at the government building that he made the irrevocable decision to resign after last night’s events in Novi Sad, when students were attacked.
He stated that this morning he had a long and meaningful conversation with President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, noting that Vučić accepted his decision and arguments.
I think that this demonstrates the accountability of those elected to be accountable, Vučević said, reiterating that politicians should accept responsibility and show that they are ready to contribute to calming tensions in society.
He said that the tragedy in Novi Sad, caused by the canopy collapse at the railway station, cast a long shadow over the government’s achievements, and that Serbia has been stuck in the aftermath of that event ever since.
What has overshadowed not only the past year but certainly this government’s mandate is the great tragedy in Novi Sad on 1 November 2024, in which 15 people lost their lives and two were seriously injured, Vučević pointed out.
According to him, the tragedy has once again been politically exploited, with attempts to gain politically from the loss of human lives.
Vučević also highlighted the deep divisions that have emerged – not in terms of numbers and citizens’ support for any particular political option, but in creating an atmosphere in society where everything is on the verge of a conflict.
As a result, he went on to say, we have come to the point where students are being counted in terms of who attends class, where teachers argue in staff rooms, and parents fight and tally up numbers in Viber groups.
Someone who came up with it – and I am free to say now that this was absolutely thought out abroad – I have no doubt about that, struck at the most sensitive part of society: the education of children, Vučević stated.
In his view, the situation was carefully planned with the aim of directly destabilising Serbia, considering everything that followed, namely protests, blockades, fights and violent confrontations.
Vučević stressed that he is proud of the results achieved by the government in the past nine months and expressed his gratitude to the ministers and members of the government for their cooperation and to the President of the Republic for his support.
He stated that he will perform the duties of Prime Minister until his successor is elected, and noted that this is now a caretaker government with a technical mandate.
We will do our jobs professionally and responsibly until a new government is elected, or until a new or different political decision is made, Vučević concluded.
Vučević further announced that Milan Đurić would resign from his position as Mayor of Novi Sad today.
