Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated today that the United States sanctions on oil company Naftna industrija Srbije (NIS) have been postponed for 30 days.
In a statement to the Tanjug agency, Đedović Handanović said that the Serbian side received information last night from the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) confirming that Serbia’s request for a postponement of sanctions had been accepted.
The US side stated that it understands the importance of NIS for the Serbian economy and citizens, as well as for regional energy stability, and that this company is vital for the functioning of some of the most important activities in Serbian society, such as the healthcare system, police and other key sectors, the Minister said.
According to her, this permission from the US administration, i.e., the postponement of sanctions on NIS for 30 days, does not apply to US citizens and the US financial system.
She emphasised that the state, led by President of the Republic Aleksandar Vučić, Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and all members of the NIS Working Group, has made coordinated diplomatic efforts to convey to the US administration the critical importance of NIS for the country and the potential impact on Serbian citizens.
The Minister recalled that the US side has said from the beginning that this is not the goal and that the sanctions are not directed against Serbia and its citizens.
Đedović Handanović said that, although this is a positive development, it does not mean that the state will stop working on this issue, which is still of the utmost importance for the Government of the Republic of Serbia, given the strategic importance of NIS for the Serbian economy and population.
