Nikolic underlined at the beginning of the meeting that he appreciates this principled stance of Russia, and that Serbia sees Russia as its great ally, associate and partner, and that it will be so in the future.
He said that today Serbia has no enemies, but that it has good friends and very good friends, and it sees Russia as a big friend.
Serbia thus shows that it thinks in the same way as our ancestors did and it teaches her children to love Russia. We are connected by the common Slavic origin, language, religion, tradition, culture, but also by the fact that we have always been on the same side, the President of Serbia declared.
Putin pointed out that the two countries have many common things form the past, and that they have a good future ahead of them.
He recalled that 70 years ago the battles were fought for the liberation of Belgrade, adding that that was a common fight for the right thing.
Speaking about Kosovo-Metohija, whose independence is not recognised by Russia, Putin explained that Moscow has a principled position on this matter that is not only based on the friendly relations between the two countries, but also on international law.
This is a principled position that is not subject to any change. We support Serbia and we intend to continue supporting it, the President of Russia reiterated.
He said that trade and economic relations are on the rise, but that they could be much better, and expressed hope that during today's talks with Serbian officials more ways for cooperation will be discovered.
Nikolic presented the President of the Russian Federation with the Order of the Republic of Serbia on a sash, which he received for outstanding achievements in the development and strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries.
