Construction of Belgrade Metro to begin on 22 November

Belgrade, 3 November 2021

Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali announced today that the construction of the first line of the Belgrade Metro will begin on 22 November, when construction works will begin on Makisko Polje, and underlined that the funds for this project have been secured in their entirety.

In the Old Palace in Belgrade, Mali attended the signing of the Contract agreement for the project of infrastructure construction and the filling up of the plateau for the metro depot in Makisko Polje in Belgrade.

The Contract agreement was signed by Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Tomislav Momirovic, Secretary of the Secretariat for Housing and Communal Affairs Nikola Kovacevic, Director of the Belgrade Land Development Directorate Dusica Andjelkovic and authorised representative of Power China Yang Bo.

Mali explained that an integrated rail system is planned, which will connect three metro lines and will get connected to the further expansion of the Belgrade Train.

The beginning of works on the construction of access roads on Makisko Polje is planned for May 2023, the beginning of works on the construction of stations is planned for September 2023, while the works on the construction of tunnels are planned for December 2023, specified Mali.

Momirovic assessed that today is a great day for Serbia, because this project brings a better perspective to both the citizens and the city of Belgrade.

Once it is completely finished, the first metro line will connect Zeleznik and Mirijevo, it will be 21.1 kilometres long and will have 21 stations. The second line will connect Bezanija and Mirijevo, will be 21 kilometres long and will have 23 stations. These two lines will intersect on Sava Square. The first metro line is planned to be completed in 2028, and the second in 2030.
