Bilateral relations between Serbia, Turkey at historic high

Belgrade/Ankara, 26 January 2023

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic said today in Ankara, after a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu that the bilateral relations of the two countries are at a historical maximum, as well as that Serbia and Turkey had a trade exchange of almost $2.5 billion last year, and that the goal is for it to reach $5 billion.

Dacic stated at the joint press conference with Çavuşoğlu that this is an extremely open and friendly relationship, a relationship of trust, which is also based on the trust of the two presidents.

It is certain that our economic cooperation is on the rise and that we have a whole series of investments, whereby a large number of people are employed, he said, stressing that these are infrastructure projects that help the development of Serbia.

Dacic reminded that, after the previously reached agreement on the abolition of visas, the Serbian parliament should also ratify an amendment that will allow travel only with identity cards.

The First Deputy Prime Minister said that Serbia and Turkey want to be constructive in international relations and not to be on anyone's side.

We stand for respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. We did not join the sanctions against Russia because of our state and national interests, but also because of economic cooperation with Russia, as well as because of the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, because Russia supports us on that matter. It would be incorrect and harmful to introduce sanctions, but that does not mean that we will not say clearly that we do not support the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, said Dacic.

Çavuşoğlu assessed that Serbia and Turkey are in the "golden age" of bilateral cooperation and that Turkey will continue to work on improving relations with Serbia, adding that Turkey is ready to help our country in connection with the recent floods.

Speaking about the investments, Çavuşoğlu said that they have increased from $1 million to $400 million, and that the government of Turkey is responsible for this, which helps Turkish companies to quickly solve their problems.
