Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said today that our country is well prepared for the current heating season, as additional gas reserves have been secured in storage facilities in Serbia and Hungary.
Opening the Southeast Europe Gas Forum 2023, hosted by the Energija Balkana portal, Djedovic Handanovic emphasised that with the completion of the gas interconnection with Bulgaria, Serbia will have the opportunity to be supplied with gas not only from Russia, but from Azerbaijan and the LNG terminal in Greece too.
We currently have close to 700 million cubic meters of gas in storages in Serbia and Hungary, which is an all-time record, the Minister said, pointing out that each new storage capacity means greater security of supply.
According to her, the construction of the Serbia-Bulgaria gas interconnection, through which our country will be able to connect to the TAP and TANAP gas pipelines, is in the final phase. The construction will be physically completed in mid-November, and work will be done in parallel to obtain the necessary permits.
She pointed out that according to the projections to 2030, the total consumption of gas is expected to grow from approximately three billion cubic meters in 2022 to around four billion cubic meters of gas, which is why we need an increase in natural gas storage capacity in Serbia, as well as the construction of additional interconnections with the neighbours.
This primarily refers to the gas pipelines to North Macedonia and Romania, which will provide the gas infrastructure necessary for the import and transit of about 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas, Djedovic Handanovic explained.
