Prime Minister Ana Brnabic met today with a delegation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), led by the head of CERN's Information Technology Department, Enrica Porkari.
The Prime Minister pointed out that this is a big and significant day, when it comes to the cooperation between the government of the Republic of Serbia and CERN, since today in the State Data Centre in Kragujevac, a memorandum of understanding will be signed on cooperation in the introduction and exploitation of the World LHC computer network for the purpose of forming "Tier-1 centre".
Serbia wants to become one of the leading countries in terms of high technologies, artificial intelligence and biomedicine, Brnabic pointed out and added that this cooperation represents a good opportunity and a reference for our country.
The signing of the memorandum, the Prime Minister assessed, is an excellent starting point for Serbia to become part of the global computer infrastructure as soon as possible, the purpose of which is to provide resources to store, process, transfer and analyse data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
With this, she added, Serbia becomes the 7th country in Europe and the 10th in the world where the data of the largest global scientific experiment is stored.
Porkari pointed out that Serbia's commitment and vision when it comes to science, innovation and technology is an excellent example and inspiration for other countries, and emphasized that she is very glad to have the opportunity to visit the Centre in Kragujevac and sign the aforementioned memorandum.
At the meeting, it was pointed out that CERN plans to engage its collaborators and colleagues from other "Tier -1" centres, in order to start this project as soon as possible, which will be made official after a one-year trial period.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Information and Telecommunications Mihailo Jovanovic, Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begovic and Acting Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment Milan Latinovic.
