Serbia will continue to pursue independent, sovereign foreign policy

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic said today that Serbia, as before, will continue to implement an independent foreign policy, based primarily on the preservation of national and state interests, but always respecting the basic principles of international law.

In his speech at the New Year's reception organised for members of the government and the diplomatic corps, Dacic said that it is very offensive when his colleagues from influential countries say that Serbia is someone's extended hand.

He reminded that Serbia is an old European country whose people sacrificed their lives for common civilisational goals.

Whose extended hand were we when on 27 March 1941 we refused to join Hitler's Triple Pact or in 1948 when we said 'no' to Stalin, Dacic said and asked whose extended hand was Pristina when it was allowed not to implement the Brussels Agreement, guaranteed by the EU, for eleven years.

The First Deputy Prime Minister repeated that Serbia is not anyone's extended hand, but the hand of the Serbian people and Serbia.

That hand will not sign anything that is to the detriment of Serbia while fighting for peace and respect for the principles of international law, Dacic pointed out and said that Serbia will not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of "Kosovo" nor will it allow "Kosovo" to become a member of the UN.

Serbia pursues an independent policy while preserving state interests and respecting the principles of international law, he underlined.
