Strengthening accountability in use of local budget funds

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Siniša Mali today asked 70 presidents and representatives of municipalities in Serbia to exercise greater fiscal responsibility in the use of local budget funds, as well as greater commitment to designing local EU-backed projects that benefit all citizens.

At the gathering on the importance of EU financial assistance and proper spending of funds, Mali said that local governments must adopt a more strategic mindset and, in the future, seek to rely more on their own resources than on the state budget.

Mali also underscored the need to handle EU funds in accordance with regulations, in order to prevent misuse and present Serbia as a serious candidate for full EU membership.

Regarding EU accession, he stressed that Serbia has an ambitious plan to be fully aligned with the EU acquis by the end of 2026.

The government is committed to economic growth and European integration, he said, noting that what needs to be done in the next two years is the Reform Agenda or Growth Agenda in Agreement with the EU.

Mali also recalled that the EU is the largest donor of funds to Serbia and that since 2001, Serbia has received more than €4 billion in grants from EU taxpayers for various projects, mainly at the local level.
