Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić said today in Berlin that Serbia has achieved a significant reduction and slowdown of migratory movements through its territory thanks to increased measures.
At the 10th anniversary ministerial meeting of the Western Balkans Berlin Process Summit, Dačić pointed out that in the period from 1 January to 2 September 2024, there was a 61.8% decrease in the number of illegal border crossings (10,216) at Serbia’s state borders compared to the same period in 2023 (26,775).
He pointed out that Serbia is committed to a strong, unique, regional, but also global response to this phenomenon, and emphasised intensive cooperation with partner services in the region, especially with Europol and Frontex.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the asylum system in Serbia is almost completely harmonised with the EU acquis, and added that since February this year, travel documents for refugees have been issued, and the Master Plan for Eurodac is being developed with Frontex.
Today, on the sidelines of the meeting, Dačić spoke with Minister of the Interior and Community of the Federal Republic of Germany Nancy Faeser about further cooperation between the two countries in the areas of the fight against organised crime and irregular migration, as well as the improvement of border protection.
The officials agreed that cooperation in the field of the interior has been good and assessed that there is room for improving cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for Germany's assistance so far to the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, which directs all available capacities towards the fight against irregular migration.
Faeser gave an exceptionally positive assessment of the efforts that Serbia is undertaking to prevent irregular migration, especially on the border with Hungary.
The Deputy Prime Minister also spoke with Minister for Border Security and Asylum of the United Kingdom Angela Eagle and the State Secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior Zoltán Bolcsik about improving cooperation in the field of interior.
