Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesić stated that he will resign tomorrow due to the accident at the Novi Sad Railway Station, in which 14 people died and three were seriously injured.
Speaking at an extraordinary news conference in the Serbian government, Vesić announced that he will officially present his resignation from the office of Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure to the Prime Minister tomorrow morning and added that he will stop performing that function in the technical mandate once the National Assembly confirms his resignation.
He explained that he is resigning from the office of Minister as a responsible man who wants to show by personal example that in today’s Serbia there is moral responsibility for the fact that such a horrible accident happened in the department he leads.
At the same time, Vesić underlined that he cannot accept the blame for the death of 14 people who were killed when the canopy of the railway station collapsed because the relevant ministry could not influence the project, quality and supervision of works at the station with any of its acts.
The Minister called on the competent authorities, first and foremost the prosecutor’s office, to determine as soon as possible who is responsible for the accident that happened and who, in the circle of project designer, contractor, supervisor and investor, failed to do the work due to which 14 innocent people died.
