President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić said tonight that Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc will be the Prime Minister-designate.
Speaking at a press conference at the Palace of Serbia, Vučić announced that the new government will be elected by Good Friday and that it faces difficult tasks – for the country to oppose all pressures regarding regional politics, to resolve the tariff issue with the USA, to accelerate progress along the European path, to simultaneously preserve its traditional friends in the East and to restore the level of investments, both foreign and domestic.
The new government will have a major task – to continue preserving peace and stability, and to act with tolerance and patience. The government should be clearly committed to the future and our desire and intention is to bring Serbia back to the pedestal of the winner and the fastest growing economy by the end of the year, the President of Serbia said.
Vučić said that our country needs unity, peace and stability and assessed that due to internal tensions in society we are unable to see all the risks and challenges we face.
At the conference, he also pointed to the difficult situation in the region, especially the political situation in Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where verdicts have been issued against the highest officials – the President, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska.
The President added that 16 people from central Serbia who went to visit the Orthodox Seminary and monasteries in the vicinity of Prizren were arrested in Kosovo and Metohija, and warned that daily terror against Serbs in our southern province continues.
Vučić also said that within one month he expects a meeting with President of the United States of America (USA) Donald Trump, at which he will again raise the issue of the introduction of tariffs and duties on Serbian goods by the USA.
I believe that we will find a solution to reduce customs duties to the lowest possible level and we are ready to accept talks and any kind of solution in discussions with our American colleagues, the President of Serbia said.
According to him, the increase in customs duties is a serious issue for Serbia, not because of the volume of total trade with the USA, but because of the consequences for certain economic sectors, and this situation also sends a bad signal to potential investors.
If Serbia has higher customs barriers than the European Union, this may affect the decisions of investors. Therefore, we will do everything we can to solve this problem, Vučić concluded.
