Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica attended the Christmas liturgy served by Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Pavle in the Patriarchate of Pec on January 7.
“Today is a great holiday, the day of Christ’s nativity, Christmas. This day is celebrated with love and hope in every part of our country as well as abroad where our people live. At this very place, in Kosovo-Metohija, it is being marked in a very moving manner, with renewed hope,” Kostunica told the gathered believers.
The Prime Minister stressed that Christmas is a holiday of hope.
“When I say hope I mean the peace and love that we need so much. That’s why I am offering these Christmas greetings, primarily to our people in Kosovo-Metohija,” said Kostunica.
Serbian Patriarch Pavle, who served the Divine Liturgy at the Patriarchate of Pec, also attended the burning of the Christmas oak branch on January 6th. The Patriarch wished God’s peace and blessing to the sisterhood and the gathered believers, who came from the Metohija enclaves, with the words:
“We pray in this holy temple erected by our ancestors several hundred years ago, where they prayed, both in time of peace and slavery, in the time of trouble, hardship and suffering. We pray to the Son of God to send peace to these regions in Kosovo-Metohija, to our country and the whole world. We all need peace, and justice and freedom are necessary for us all. Lord, Son of God, who was born on this day and took upon yourself the sins of mankind since creation. Sin brings death and you knowingly chose death on the cross so that we could have eternal life. Help us Lord not to stray from your path until the end because you said, ‘the one who perseveres will be saved’. Lord, grant peace to all people, including us, we need it here, both us and the Albanians and all people who live here. We need freedom and justice and that is why we pray to you God of Truth, Justice and Love, support us, kiss all people of good will so that they may carry on and bear witness to You and Your Name, Your Justice in this corrupt world. May this day be a joyful one, Christ is born. God bless and may he send all good things your way. Amen!”
