Exchange of knowledge with IAEA in field of peaceful application of nuclear energy

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović and Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begović spoke today with the expert mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about cooperation in the field of peacetime applications nuclear energy.

Đedović Handanović said that our goal is to get at least 45 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2030.

She pointed out that Serbia is at the very beginning of the process of establishing an institutional and regulatory framework, so that the possibility of using nuclear energy in our country could be considered.

We are aware that this is a long process, which lasts at least 10 to 15 years, and it is important to carry out each step efficiently, with quality and responsibly.

Begović assessed that the projects implemented with the IAEA represent an opportunity for Serbia and its scientific community to get involved, not only in regional, but also in global trends, when it comes to nuclear energy.

The head of the IAEA expert mission, Jing Zhang, said that the agency does not influence the decision-making of member countries on the implementation of the Program for the Development of Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy, but that it is ready to provide assistance and support to those countries that decide to implement the programme.
