Establishing transparent textbook market

Belgrade, 13 March 2025

The Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted, at the proposal of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, a Conclusion ordering the amendment of the Law on Textbooks and providing clear instructions for the establishment of a transparent textbook market, the abolition of monopolies, as well as the introduction of a maximum retail price for textbooks.

It is particularly important that this establishes a category of importance for the development of personal and national identity, which should contribute to the development of awareness and a sense of belonging to the Republic of Serbia, respect and nurturing of the Serbian language, traditions and culture of the Serbian people and national minorities in our country.

In this regard, the introduction of a national package of textbooks in primary and potentially secondary education was requested, which includes the following subjects: Serbian language, Serbian language and literature, the world around us, nature and society, history, geography, music and art culture, and which should be published by a single Serbian public publisher.

Vučević said that the time has come to undertake responsible and courageous activities in the matter of education, which are of long-term interest for our homeland, primarily for our children and their upbringing, but also for parents, who will, with this measure, allocate significantly less money for top-quality textbooks.
