Prime Minister Ana Brnabic met today with rectors of state universities, deans of faculties of the universities of Belgrade and Nis, as well as with the Student Conference of the Universities of Serbia and student parliaments of the faculties.
The participants in the meeting discussed the current topic of tuition fee increases and the improvement of the higher education financing system.
Brnabic underlined that the meeting was organised in the first place in order to find a way for even better cooperation.
She added that the state invests large amounts of money in education, but that it is necessary to increase transparency, to see the results of the investments so that Serbia could have a higher education that will be aligned with the needs of the state, the economy and students.
The Prime Minister pointed out that it is necessary to establish sustainability of the system of higher education, by strengthening connections between the labour market, research activity and stimulation of development, i.e. provision of support to changes, innovation and deficit areas.
The establishment of the Unified Education Information System enabled the government to have answers to questions it did not have until now – how long students study, how many drop out of programmes after the first year or at any time during their studies, and how many continue education, what is the institutional annual cost for each programme and for each study programme, how many graduates get employed and how quickly, and this information can be the starting point for drafting a new law or by-laws.
At the meeting it was agreed that the Ministry of Education, together with the Office of Prime Minister Brnabic, sets up a working group that will work on a draft law on higher education financing, and the invitation to take part in the working group has been supported and accepted by all participants in the meeting.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali, Minister of Education Branko Ruzic and Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begovic.
