Prime Minister Miloš Vučević today laid a wreath at the Menorah in Flames Memorial on the Danube Quay in Belgrade to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Vučević emphasised that the Holocaust represents one of the greatest tragedies that humanity has experienced in modern history, noting that Serbia has made an extraordinary effort in the last decade to build a lasting culture of remembrance for its victims of that crime.
The Prime Minister recalled that Jews, Slavs, Roma, political dissidents and others were victims of a destructive ideology that forever left a dark shadow over the history of Europe and all of humanity.
On this day 80 years ago, Soviet forces halted the Nazi death machine at the Auschwitz concentration camp, he remarked, adding that the Holocaust remembrance is our obligation, not only out of respect for the victims, but also for the sake of future generations.
The trend of a rise in anti-Semitic incidents and attacks in Europe serves as clear evidence that the ideologies of division and hatred were not defeated in 1945, but are instead being reactivated in our time, the Prime Minister said.
According to him, the denial, distortion and misuse of the memory of the Holocaust are not a coincidence, and therefore it is important that as a society we redouble our efforts and all together condemn such processes.
He specified that numerous monuments to the Holocaust victims have been restored in Serbia, memorial plaques placed and new institutions established, adding that it is difficult to count how many scientific papers and monographs have been written on this topic.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the adoption of the Law on Remedying Consequences of Seizure of Assets from Holocaust Victims with no Legal Living Heirs serves as an example for other countries on how to address such tragic events, noting that all this demonstrates Serbia’s clear intention to never forget these events.
Vučević laid the wreath as an envoy of the President of the Republic. The ceremony marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day was also attended by government ministers, ambassadors of Israel and Russia, Rabbi Isaac Asiel and many others.
