Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić received today a delegation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), led by IHRA Chair Lord Eric Pickles.
Repeating Serbia’s commitment to fostering a culture of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and our full support for the work of the IHRA, Đurić pointed to the intensive activities of our delegation at the Alliance, particularly noticeable in the previous period.
In this regard, the head of Serbian diplomacy emphasised broader international engagement of the Serbian delegation in terms of informing the IHRA community about initiatives aimed at preserving the memory of the Holocaust, as well as the Serbian and Roma victims of World War II.
He also recalled that Serbia is one of the few member countries of the Alliance whose Government has officially adopted all the working definitions of the IHRA on many issues, as well as that the joint work of our institutions has begun on their implementation.
According to Đurić, the seriousness of our country’s approach to the issue of the Holocaust is evidenced by the fact that Serbia was the first European country that, as a signatory of the Terezin Declaration, passed the Law on Elimination of the Consequences Made by Confiscation of Property of Holocaust Victims Who Have No Legal Descendants.
In relation to the legislation, the head of Serbian diplomacy added that it is also very important that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Law on the Staro sajmište memorial complex, pointing out that our country achieves notable results in terms of preservation, research and presentation of places of suffering and military memorials.
Following the recently adopted recommendations of the international expert IHRA team regarding the analysis of the current situation in the Jasenovac Memorial Area, he reiterated the importance of their implementation for Serbia, bearing in mind that Jasenovac was the biggest place of suffering of our people during World War II, an announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.
