In the presence of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret, the document was signed by EIB Vice President Lilyana Pavlova, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic, Minister for European Integration Tanja Miscevic and Director General of the Serbian Railway Infrastructure Nebojsa Surlan.
A grant of €265 million was previously awarded for this key infrastructure project in Serbia.
After signing the contract, Miscevic pointed out that it is the job of the Serbian government to do what brings the most benefits to the citizens in partnership with the EU.
Vesic stated that after the high-speed railway to Novi Sad, a similar railway to Subotica is being built, that the construction of a 228-kilometer high-speed railway to Nis is starting now, and that he expects that a high-speed railway to Presevo will be built in the future.
The minister announced a Serbian-Hungarian initiative aimed at representatives of Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Albania and North Macedonia, for a meeting on the subject of the continuation of the high-speed rail project toward these countries.
Pavlova pointed out that it is about supporting the realisation of a key strategic investment.
We believe that investing in a new, modern, high-speed railway, which will pollute less, is of key importance for Serbia, the region and the EU. It will enable better connections between the people of the region and better opportunities for transporting goods, said Pavlova.
Giaufret said that the investment in the mentioned railway is a large programme launched 30 days ago, which is supported by the EU, and that its value is over €1 billion.
