Interior Ministry leads international operation to seize 2.7 tons of cocaine

Belgrade, 1 September 2023

The Ministry of the Interior stated today that in the international operation, led by members of the Serbian police, in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office for Organised Crime and the Intelligence and Security Agency and in coordination with Europol and several European police forces, 2.7 tons of cocaine were seized on a sailboat in the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of this action, the organiser of this organized criminal group S.K. (1953) was arrested in Serbia, as well as members of that group N.S. (1988), N.S. (1980) and B.K. (1983).

The Criminal Police of the Belgrade Police Administration launched an investigation into this organised criminal group in January 2022 due to the suspicion that it is engaged in wholesale cocaine smuggling from South America to the European Union.

Activities against this network have been extended to other world police forces through a coordinated investigation led by Europol within the "Balkan Cartel" operative working group.

The competent authorities of Spain, Brazil, Croatia, France, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia participated in the operation, which was led by Serbia, with the coordination of Europol.

In this action, the Ministry of the Interior once again showed that it is a reliable and leading partner in the fight against international narcotics trade and the fight against organised crime.
