Continued cooperation with Japan on joint energy projects

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović met today with Ambassador of Japan to Serbia Akira Imamura to discuss the two countries’ cooperation in the field of energy, primarily on the implementation of the Bistrica pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant project.

The officials concluded that the focus of the current activities is on the efficient preparation of technical and other documentation, which should be completed this year, in accordance with the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) additional requirements.

Both sides will make additional efforts to ensure that the financing approval procedure with JICA is as efficient as possible.

The Minister praised the cooperation with Japanese contractors on the revitalisation of the Bajina Bašta hydroelectric power plant, which is important for the country’s energy security, especially in conditions of high electricity consumption.

The meeting also touched upon the dynamics of the implementation of the project for the construction of a desulphurisation facility at the Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant, which is being carried out by Japanese companies.

Imamura said that Japan recognises the importance of the Bistrica hydroelectric power plant project for Serbia, and expressed readiness to continue cooperation that will enable the efficient implementation of joint initiatives.
