On that occasion, Vučić said that 26 years ago, we were not defeated in the NATO aggression, because we did not bow our heads, and added that today he is the president of a free country that makes its own decisions and is governed by the people.
He emphasised that today, 26 years after the NATO aggression, he feels sadness and grief for the victims and everything we have gone through, but also unlimited pride, because, regardless of what we have lost, we were not defeated.
The President of the Republic recalled that 26 years ago our country was attacked by 19 countries, which have 67 times more population and 228 times more territory than us, but that we did not bow our heads and did not fall, never to rise again.
The state commemorative gathering began at 19:55 with a memorial service, served by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije and the clergy, at the time when the air raid sirens sounded 26 years ago.
The commemoration was also attended by Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić, President of the Provincial Government Maja Gojković, President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik, former president of Serbia Tomislav Nikolić, representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces and the police, religious communities, as well as a large number of citizens.
The NATO aggression against Serbia, or the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, lasted from 24 March to 10 June 1999, and according to data from the Serbian Ministry of Defence, during the 78 days of aggression, 1,031 members of the army and police were killed, while approximately 2,500 civilians, including 89 children, were killed.
Approximately 6,000 civilians were wounded, including 2,700 children, as well as 5,173 soldiers and police officers, whereas 25 people went missing.
