Dedicated efforts by government to include, improve position of Roma people

Outgoing Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Tomislav Žigmanov stated today that Serbia respects high standards in the protection of all national minorities, placing particular emphasis on the Roma as one of the most vulnerable national communities.

At the public hearing “About Roma with Roma”, the central event marking 8 April – International Roma Day – Žigmanov emphasised that the government and the line ministry are committed to efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for the Roma, achieving greater social inclusion in all areas of life, respecting human and minority rights and eliminating discrimination.

Outgoing Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Nemanja Starović said that work on a draft law is planned to establish a fund for the improvement of the status of the Roma.

Outgoing Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković noted that Roma culture is a symbiosis of numerous cultures and stressed the importance of nurturing and promoting it, as this is a way to preserve the Roma national identity.

Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret pointed out that discrimination and exclusion undermine the very foundations of our societies, and that we must continue breaking down these barriers, ensuring equal access to education, employment, housing and healthcare.
