Belgrade-Novi Sad high-speed railway open to traffic

Belgrade/Novi Sad, 19 March 2022

The Belgrade-Novi Sad railway, which is part of the international Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway, was opened to traffic today, and President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban were on the first high-speed train on that route, called "Soko".

The ride was also attended by Serbian government ministers, representatives of state institutions and contractors - Chinese companies "China Railway International Company" and "China Communications Construction Company", as well as representatives of Russian railways "RZD International" and domestic companies.

President Vucic pointed out that this railway will be a symbol of friendship and cooperation between Serbia and Hungary, stating that this is a new era for us since the trip to Novi Sad on the new high-speed railway took 33 minutes.

He noted that this project will further bring Serbs and Hungarians closer, considering that, once the entire railway to Hungary is ready, the trip from Belgrade to Budapest will last just two hours and 40 minutes.

Also, the railway will be a connection between southern and central Europe, the President said and also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Orban, who said that today we connect two countries, two capitals and in that way make life easier for both Serbs and Hungarians.

The Prime Minister of Hungary assessed that the cooperation between the two countries and the friendship between Serbs and Hungarians has never been closer, and that the high-speed railway from Belgrade to Novi Sad, and in a few years to Budapest, is proof of joint efforts in connecting the two countries.

He pointed out that the works in Serbia progressed quickly, and promised that the Belgrade-Budapest railway line will be operational by 2025.

Brnabic pointed out that she is proud of this project, which will have a great impact on the quality of life of citizens. This is a new, different Serbia, and in the future, a fast train will go to Nis and Presevo too.

The construction of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway is the largest and most important infrastructure project in this part of Europe. The future high-speed railway to Budapest is part of China's global Belt and Road initiative for infrastructural connections between Europe and Asia.
