Prime Minister Ana Brnabic attended today the celebration of 20 years of operation of the Philip Morris company in Serbia, and on that occasion announced a new investment by this company worth $100 million, which will bring 200 new jobs.
On behalf of the government, Brnabic signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the company Philip Morris Operations a.d. Nis and the Serbian government.
The Prime Minister pointed out that today's anniversary represents a new beginning for the company Philip Morris International in Serbia, which is one of the leaders in innovation, modern technologies and which offers its consumers increasingly innovative and better solutions.
The fact that you opted for Nis and Serbia at a time of instability in Europe is an additional confirmation of trust in the Republic of Serbia, and for that I extend my sincere gratitude, she said.
She added that the investment of $5 million by Philip Morris in the StarTech project to support innovation and digital transformation of the Serbian economy is an example of responsible business and the way in which the company supports the vision of the Serbian government in making our country a European centre for modern technology.
The Prime Minister stated that she is especially pleased that the company decided to extend the mentioned project for the next three years.
With this investment, the factory in Nis, which until now produced only traditional cigarettes, will launch production of a new line of smokeless tobacco products, which will be intended for export.
Owing to the latest investment, about 200 new jobs will be created, and with this investment, the total investment of the Philip Morris company in operations in Serbia will exceed $1 billion.
The investment was announced on behalf of the company by CEO Jacek Olczak, who said that this is a big step towards realising the vision of the future in which cigarettes will be replaced by better alternatives.
We are grateful to the Serbian government for creating a good business environment that allowed us to successfully operate here for 20 years, but also to continue investing, said Olczak.
He stated that, with the appropriate regulatory framework and support, a future without tobacco smoke can be achieved with joint efforts.
