Prime Minister Miloš Vučević stated today in Kruševac that Vidovdan is the cornerstone of our culture and national identity, as well as a reminder of the key moments and trials we have faced as a nation throughout history.
At the central event marking the national holiday Vidovdan and the 635th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, Vučević said that this day is one of the most important dates in the history of Serbia and the Serbian people, which we have been commemorating for 635 years.
"Vidovdan is a day when the past, present, and future intertwine. The fateful June 28 is not just a date on some calendar, but a moment symbolising resilience, sacrifice and all that is good within us," Vučević emphasised.
According to him, Vidovdan is a public confession of collective memory that warns and awakens, encourages and supports, strengthens and teaches.
"Vidovdan is also a reminder that we triumphed, not lost. On this day, we remember the numerous martyrs who fell for the homeland, the people, and the faith, before Kosovo, at Kosovo, and after Kosovo. Among them, foremost is Saint Prince Lazar, who in 1389 chose the heavenly kingdom over the transient earthly one," the Prime Minister highlighted.
He noted that Prince Lazar made the decision to fight, knowing that all the circumstances were against him, which embodies the spirit of Vidovdan.
"It is the choice of honour over succumbing to injustice, to the stronger and more powerful. It is something that lowly souls, imprisoned by chains of servitude, cannot grasp or understand," Vučević asserted.
He emphasised that the colossal battle at Kosovo is deeply etched into the national consciousness, reminding us of the high price of freedom.
