Serbian writer, journalist and lawyer Svetozar Miletić was born on this day in 1826.
He was the leader of Serbs in Vojvodina in the fight for national rights in Austria-Hungary, mayor of Novi Sad, deputy of the Serbian Church Council, deputy of the Croatian-Slavonic and Hungarian Councils.
Vučević pointed out that Serbs in this part of Serbia, Vojvodina, are devoted to and committed to the idea, thoughts and fight of Svetozar Miletić, saying that they will defend Vojvodina in Serbia, because, as he said, this is a prerequisite for our freedom and survival.
The Prime Minister underlined that Miletić was explaining to the people and teaching them that freedom will only be achieved when we have the right to call ourselves Serbs, to use the Serbian language and to free ourselves from all the prefixes that were placed on us to cloud our views and national perspectives.
He said that he is proud that the Government of Serbia, within the framework of the programme of state holidays, last year included the date of birth of Svetozar Miletić as a bank holiday.
This is not only a holiday of a local and regional nature, but also a state and national one, Vučević stated.
