Outgoing Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić and Minister of Defence of Hungary Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky signed an Agreement on Strategic Cooperation in the Field of Defence in the presence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade today.
The signed document operationalises and further defines the Agreement on Strategic Cooperation in the Field of Defence, which was reached in 2023, Vučić said, adding that Serbia has the most developed and intensive defence cooperation in the region with Hungary.
He emphasised that the key elements are military-to-military cooperation, reflected in bilateral and multinational exercises, and military-technical cooperation in the areas of procurement of systems and weaponry.
According to him, the largest number of activities has been agreed in this area for this year, 79 so far, which is almost twice as many as in 2023.
Recalling that Hungary is now Serbia’s fifth-largest trade partner, Vučić said that trade between the two countries last year amounted to €3.03 billion, with Serbian exports to Hungary increasing by five to six times compared to 2012.
Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that the two countries regularly consult at the highest level even though Serbia is not a member of the European Union, noting that since 2023, bilateral cooperation has also been expanded to the military field.
Accordingly, the sides have moved on to the 2025 plan today, he stated, underlining that Hungary is always on the side of peace and that Serbia is its ally in this.
Hungary has always emphasised the importance of Serbia becoming a member of the EU, and as far as military cooperation is concerned, Hungary has always helped Serbia in preserving peace, the Hungarian Minister of Defence noted.
